Pidgey (Japanese: ポッポ Poppo) is a dual-type Normal/Flight Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

It evolves into Pidgeotto starting at level 18, which evolves into Pidgeot starting at level 36.

Biological science

Pidgey is a pocket-size, plump-bodied avian Pokémon. It is primarily dark-brown with a foam-colored face up, underside, and flight feathers. On top of its head is a short crest of three tufts. The centre crest feathers are brownish and the outer two tufts are foam-colored. Just under its crest are its narrow eyes which accept white sclera and student along with its black irises. Angular blackness marking extend from behind its optics and continue downwards its cheeks. Information technology has a short, stubby beak and feet with two toes in front end and one in back. Both its beak and feet are a grayish-pink. Information technology has a brusque, brown tail fabricated of three feathers.

Pidgey has an extremely precipitous sense of direction and homing instincts. It can travel straight back to its nest regardless of how far away they might have flown. Information technology is a docile Pokémon and generally prefers to abscond from its enemies rather than fight them. Past flapping its wings rapidly, it can whip up dust clouds and create whirlwinds to protect itself and flush out potential casualty. Gust and Feather Trip the light fantastic are its former signature moves. Pidgey is very common throughout its range and can frequently be seen in meadows and temperate forests. Ekans and Sneasel are natural predators of Pidgey. Pidgey preys on Seedot.

Trivia

  • According to the Pokémon Cherry-red and Blue beta, Pidgey was originally going to be named "Pidge".
  • Pidgey shares its category with Spearow, Natu, and Rookidee. They are all known as the Tiny Bird Pokémon, though Natu has also been called the Little Bird Pokémon.
  • Pidgey is the only Pokémon with a base stat total of 251.
  • In the anime, Pidgey is erroneously depicted with four talons on each foot, as opposed to three.
  • Pidgey has the shortest cry of any Pokémon, beingness only 0.181 seconds long.

Origin

Despite its name, Pidgey more closely resembles various passerine birds such as sparrows, chickadees, waxwings, and wrens than it does a pigeon. However, in that location have been references in the anime to "Pidgey Mail", which is an allusion to homing pigeons. The black markings around its eyes are reminiscent of Ra and Horus, the sun and heaven gods of Egyptian mythology who were depicted with the heads of falcons.

Proper noun origin

Pidgey may be a corruption of pigeon or a combination of budgie, chickadee, and butterball (modest and plump).

Poppo may be derived from ぽっぽ poppo (onomatopoetic audio of a pigeon'southward coo).
